Intrauterine System

A small, plastic T-shaped device with a cylinder around its stem that contains the hormone progestogen. It's placed inside the uterus (womb) by a doctor or nurse.

How long does it last?

Works for five years but can be taken out sooner.

How does it work?

Releases a small amount of the hormone progestogen, which prevents fertilisation and implantation of the egg. It also thickens the mucus to stop the sperm reaching the egg.

What about my fertility?

When removed, you can expect your previous fertility to return.
