Intrauterine Device

A small, plastic device with copper wrapped around its stem and with a nylon string that's placed inside the uterus (womb) by a doctor or nurse.

In addition to providing ongoing protection, the IUD can be used as a form of emergency contraception when inserted within 120 hours of sex.

How long does it last?

Works for five or ten years but can be taken out sooner.

How does it work?

Prevents fertilisation and implantation of the egg.

What about my fertility?

When removed, you can expect your previous fertility to return.
