The Rod

Contraceptive Implant

A small, flexible plastic rod (about the size of a matchstick) that contains the hormone progestogen. Placed just under the skin on the inside of the upper arm by a doctor or nurse.

How long does it last?

Works for up to three years but can be taken out sooner.

How does it work?

Releases a small amount of the hormone progestogen which:

Stops an egg being released
Thickens mucus to stop sperm reaching an egg.

What about my fertility?

When removed, you can expect your previous fertility to return.
